The Draeger Interlock System: Overview and Working
Primarily designed for impaired driving prevention, the Draeger Interlock system is a sophisticated piece of technology that integrates breath alcohol testing with vehicle ignition systems. Essentially, this device requires the driver to perform a breath alcohol test before the vehicle can be started. If the measured breath alcohol content (BrAC) is above the state-specific limit, the device prevents the engine from being started.
The system works on the principles of breath analysis. Before starting the vehicle, the driver needs to blow into a mouthpiece on the handset for a few seconds. The Interlock device then analyses the breath sample for its alcohol content. If the alcohol concentration is above the preset limit, the device locks the vehicle's ignition system. After a failed test, the Interlock device enters a short lockout period of a few minutes for the initial failed BAC test and a longer duration for any subsequent failures, thus denying vehicle start-up.
